A new exhibit honouring the men
and women who built and fl ew the
Consolidated B-24 Liberator was
unveiled at the Warhawk Air Museum in
Nampa, Idaho on February 3.
It comprises an original Emerson
A-15 B-24 nose turret and a main
cockpit section taken from PB4Y-
Privateer 59759, an aircraft derived
from the Liberator. More detailing will
be added to the cockpit in due course,
and a Liberator rudder and Privateer
engine ring cowl are also on display.
It is being restored to resemble
a late-production San Diego-built
Liberator used by the USAAF. The team
behind the project is continuing to
look for parts to embellish the cockpit
- they would particularly like to source
the type of external armour plating
that was unique to Eighth Air Force
Liberators. FREDERICK JOHNSEN

Scout leaves Shawbury
for new home
Westland Scout AH.1 XV123 has been acquired by a new owner. The helicopter had served as
a ‘gate guardian’ at RAF Shawbury in Shropshire for around 18 years, but was sold due to
the Army Air Corps’ 660 Squadron moving to a new building. It was removed from the site
on February 20 by Everett Aero. STEPHEN DOBSON
Cold War Sabre receives
new colours in Florida
Classic Fighters of Titusville, Florida,
is currently applying the fi nishing
touches to Doug Matthews’ North
American F-86F Sabre 52-5116.
As revealed in our April issue, the
jet will represent 52-12910 Beauteous
Butch II, the mount of Capt Joseph M
McConnell. Flying with the 39th Fighter
Interceptor Squadron of the 51st
Fighter Interceptor Wing during the
Korean War, he shot down 16 Mikoyan-
Gurevich MiG-15 jets.
The aircraft has recently been
stripped of its previous scheme by
Classic Fighters’ Cris Kaufmann.
After further treatments, primer
was applied, followed by sanding in
preparation for a fresh layer of paint.
With the overall silver colour now in
place, markings are being added –
including the 16 ‘kill’ symbols worn by
McConnell’s jet. Cris is also stencilling
the checkerboard on the tail, together
with the USAF ‘star and bar’ logo.
