Loading 1,000-pounders into the bomb bay of a 49 Squadron Avro Lincoln B.2 at
Eastleigh, Nairobi, Kenya. The unit had deployed to Eastleigh on November 11, 1953
from Wittering as the state of emergency against rebels from the Kenya Land Freedom
Party, known as the ‘Mau Mau’, grew in intensity. British-based Lincoln units rotated
out to Kenya until July 1955 when 21 Squadron returned to the UK by which time the
Mau Mau had been defeated.
