LIGHTNINGS
THE ENGLISH ELECTRIC LIGHTNING WAS A MUCH-REQUESTED PERFORMER AT AIR SHOWS BECAUSE OF ITS SLEEK LOOKS,
AMAZING AGILITY IN THE AIR AND, OF COURSE, THE SHATTERING NOISE OF ITS TWO ROLLS-ROYCE AVON ENGINES.
WE PRESENT SOME PREVIOUSLY UNSEEN IMAGES OF LIGHTNINGS ON DISPLAY DURING THE TYPE’S HEYDAY.

The distinctive fl ashes and crest of 23 Squadron adorn F.3 XP737 in this circa 1965 image taken at
RAF Leuchars. It fl ew with the squadron until 1974, and was lost when serving with 5 Squadron in
August 1979 after an undercarriage failure led to abandonment near RAF Valley.
On the pan at Wattisham is F.3 XP756, which was with 29 Squadron at the time. The jet was
another accident victim, being abandoned off Great Yarmouth after a reheat fi re warning, while
being fl own by USAF exchange pilot Capt. Bill Povilus.
