SIDE STICK
The wind is calm and temperature
is 24 ºC. I begin the takeoff run.
The interesting aspect of piloting
an aircraft with side stick occurs
when the “pilot not flying” makes
the rotate callout: we take out the
hand from the throttle stick and
place it on the right leg. In a few
meters the Praetor 600 will take
off. I begin climbing at 250 knots
and we continue at that speed
until crossing level 200, then we
accelerate up to 300 knots or
Mach 0.70 until achieving level
450, 21 minutes after takeoff, with
a weight of 30,060 pounds. As
soon as we achieve the level, we
are already flying at Mach 0.80,
a typical speed of the machine,
which is able to achieve up to
Mach 0.83 MMO.
In search of maximum perfor-
mance, we begin descent down to
level 330 and, when we achieve
it, we are with a weight of 29,
pounds, flying at Match 0.82 and
a TAS of 485 knots, ISA was +10.
PAPERLESS AND
AUTOTHROTTLE
Rockwell Collins Pro Line Fusion
avionics allows pilot, by means of
a mouse, to navigate through the
four interchangeable screens. They
provide the paperless feature that,
depending on the register cate-
gory, eliminates the need of using
paper charts.
Equipped with autothrottle,
the aircraft requires less work-
load from the crew, since avionics
provides many features and redun-
dancies, including the fuel system,
which is intelligent and does not
need pilot interference during
transfers between tanks, while be-
ing in auto mode.
Piloting a fly-by-wire aircraft
with side stick makes the flight
much easier. In addition to com-
mand precision in maneuvers, it
eliminates the need of using the
compensator that is present in
conventional flight command air-
crafts. We go down to FL150 and,
at that level, we start a sequence
