PRAETOR MILITARY VERSION
During the Paris Air Show, Embraer has launched the P600 AEW,
its first aircraft after the sale of the commercial division to Boeing.
BY | EDMUNDO UBIRATAN
It is an early alert and intelligence
aircraft based on Praetor 600
platform. In practice, a compact
version of the famous E-99, derived
from the EMB-145. The P600-
AEW is one of the smaller aircrafts
within the category of Airborne
Early Warning and Control
(AEW&C). Although it is based on
a super mid-size business aircraft,
the model benefits from the
advances of on-board electronics,
allowing the installation of a
complete on-board control station
and multiuse radar, mounted in
an aerodynamic cocoon on the
fuselage, which will not demand
great engineering changes in the
project.
The aircraft will be produced in
partnership with the Elta Systems
Israeli firm, which will supply a
wide fourth-generation electronic
system, including ELM-
early warning radar, in addition to
information collection, surveillance
and intelligence sensors. Embraer
will be responsible for the aircraft
production, system integration
and supply of ground resources
and communication systems. The
cooperation agreement involves
50:50 work sharing.
The PA500W primary sensor is the
Digital Active Scanned Array AESA
radar with integrated IFF capacity,
but the model can be configured
with a wide range of early warning
control sensor systems, in addition
to an AEW Digital AESA radar,
civilian and military IFF, it can
receive ESM/ELINT systems
with capacity to receive radar,
command and control threats, a
comprehensive communication
package, including satellite data
networks and links, in addition
to a strong self-protection (SPS)
system that makes potential threat
detection, activating any necessary
electronic support measures.
The new P600 AEW should have
a comprehensive communication
solution, allowing data link
capacity, satellite communication
for operations beyond aiming line
of sight, and network-centered
war (NCR) feature. Elta system
operation considers three consoles,
which in general, in larger aircrafts
uses to have more operators. But
Embraer and Elta state that the
new model will not be different
from the capacities of larger
platforms. Among others, thanks to
the command and control system
incorporating artificial intelligence
and machine learning that helps
reducing workload and the number
of people involved in the process.
Although the final value has not
yet been defined, in addition to
depending on customer’s final
configuration, Embraer believes in
an aircraft with lower value than
models based on larger aircrafts.
The civilian basic model of Praetor
600 has a list value of US$ 21
million. The P600 AEW range
was not also established, the civil
version has a maximum range of
8,700 kilometers, but the higher
weight of the on-board system
and drag should reduce this figure,
however, the expected endurance
will not be less than four hours.
