summer afternoons and stealing
peas from kitchen windowsills and
storing them in crevices on rooftops.
I’ve also watched them collectively
raising a ‘caw’ for a funeral chorus
to honour the death of one of their
kind. The neighbourhood is so used
to their cawing that it has become a
part of our everyday existence.

Clever Crow

Early every morning I take a brisk
walk. Before the sun gets too strong,
I enjoy observing the behaviour
of the birds in my neighbourhood
in North Nazimabad, the town
where I live in Pakistan. Common
native birds I see daily include
sparrows, eagles, parakeets,
pigeons, starlings and partridges, as
well as more exotic visitors such as
nightingales in summer, finches and
hummingbirds.
