The volcanic island
of Rarotonga covers an
area of approximately
67 square kilometres,
making it the largest
and most densely
populated of the Cook
Islands, an archipelago
lying about 3500
kilometres north-east of
New Zealand. Large
parts of Rarotonga are
covered in rainforest,
but coconut palms,
citrus fruits, mangoes,
breadfruit and yams
also thrive in the fertile
volcanic soil.
