Stearman-Hammond Y-1S NC15521 is to
be restored to airworthy condition by
a new museum in the Netherlands.
The Nederlands Transport Museum
is set to open at Nieuw-Vennep, close
to Schiphol Amsterdam Airport, in the
spring. Although mostly focused on
vehicles, part of the museum will include
aircraft and the Y-1S was among the fi rst
exhibits to arrive in early January.

Not to be confused with the famous
and widely built Stearman biplane,
around 20 Stearman-Hammond utility
monoplanes were made. The Y-1S was
the production version, powered by
a 150hp (112kW) Menasco C-4S pusher
engine. The distinctive, twin-boomed
aircraft were used by Dutch airline
KLM to train pilots on nose-wheeled
aircraft. ROGER SOUPART

Pan Am ‘jumbo’ cockpit

saved for museum
The cockpit and nose of Boeing
747 N743PA has been transported
to the North East Land, Sea and
Air Museums (NELSAM), near
Sunderland. The former Pan Am
airliner had previously been used
as a training aid for fi re crews at
Prestwick in Scotland.
The airframe was due to be cut

up and disposed of, but former
RAF fi tter Stuart Abbott (who now
runs Stu-Art Aviation Furniture)
has saved the nose and cockpit
section. It is being transported to
NELSAM in several parts and will
be reassembled on site.
