80 FLYPAST March 2018

Three classic shapes together on the tarmac. All three aircraft belong to BOAC and are being
prepared for their next fl ights. Bristol Britannia G-ANBB is sandwiched between Boeing 707-436
G-APFE on the left and de Havilland Comet 4 G-APDR on the right. The Comet wears BOAC colours
but was leased to Qantas Empire Airways and used on the London to Singapore route.

The distinctive shape of a de Havilland Comet 4 tail belonging to British European Airways’ (BEA)
G-ARCP can be seen in the foreground in this archive view. This particular airliner ended its fl ying
days with Dan Air in 1973. Then registered G-BBCV, it was scrapped later that year.

Delivered in December 1959, Pan American’s Boeing 707-300 N724PA ‘Jet Clipper Mercury’
unloads its passengers after a transatlantic fl ight. This 707 stayed with Pan Am until 1971.
