Mini Mitre Board
The latest in Jim Davey’s shooting board series,
the Mini Mitre Board is designed for planing
mitres on thin stock. Its 400mm big brother
Mitre Board uses a full sized shooting or bench
plane but the 260mm Mini Board requires a
40mm (preferably low angle) block plane. With
the addition of a 3mm backer, there is minimal
blow-out at the end of the cut. Made from
marine ply with beech edging the board is set at
90°, but not glued to allow for fine adjustment in
the future. The boards are available for $95 and
left hand versions can be ordered. Phone

Duplicating Fingers
For reproducing required diameters when turning these
‘fingers’ are an ingenious aid. An allen key operated cap
screw allows each finger to be installed on a 19mm steel bar
located behind the lathe and roughly level with its centre. Set
each finger by loosening the screw and tightening over each
required diameter on a sample piece. On subsequent turnings
the finger will drop when the set diameter is reached. Once
known as semaphore jigs, the design was improved by UK
production turner Gary Rance who lengthened the fingers
and added a cap screw which allows closer positioning on the
bar. Now manufactured by professional turner and engineer
Paul Howard, the jigs are available for £65 plus postage from
woodturner Richard Findley via:

Now With Japanese Blades
Unplugged mitre saw accuracy is the Nobex Proman
110 promise. A new innovation for these worksite and
workshop favourites are Japanese 18tpi sawblades.
Made from top quality steel the Japanese style
impulse hardening is three-edge ground, has a unique
close tolerance and superior performance in all kinds
of wood. Available from Carbatec, the blades are said
to be super fast-cutting, and last four to five times
longer than standard blades.
