line (photo 18). Reposition the beam into the opposite
corners, and mark the opposite diagonal length (photo
19 ). If the pencil lines overlap each other, the carcase
is square.

If the two pencil lines are apart, place the beam in
the longer diagonal. Correct the out-of-squareness
by shifting the clamps in the direction of the longer
diagonal until the corner lines up to the middle of
the two pencil lines (photo 20). Squaring mission
accomplished!

Time-honoured cabinetmakers’ tools, such as these
pinch rods or diagonal beams, are a pleasure to make
and a joy to use in the shop. Imagine that extra twinge
of satisfaction you could derive from finishing the last
part of your assembly with tools you made yourself.
