Grease goes off over time, especially if it has been subjected
to water ingress! While we were replacing the inner axle
seals on this 80 Series, we took the time to pull the CVs
out, degrease them and inspect them for wear and damage.
Pay particular attention to any bearings that are rusted or
pitted as that is undoubtedly a fail-point in the near future.
If you’re repacking CVs, make sure that every last drop of
the old grease is removed as a small amount of water or
dirt-contaminated grease can easily stuff all the new grease
too. Repack them with moly grease which is different to
high temp wheel bearing grease. Moly grease has specifi c
additives within it to help it deal with the high force loads
the movement of the CV shaft will subject the bearings to

Before you pull a vehicle apart to the extent it can’t drive or
move, do your best to visually check that any parts you’re
replacing have been supplied correctly. Sure, you told the
parts guy at the counter that you were chasing a water pump
for a 1995 FJZ80R Landcruiser 4.5L automatic GXL seven seater,
but that doesn’t mean the water pump put into the box at
the factory was the correct one! Even better if you can match
it without pulling it out of its plastic bag. Take note of the
location of bolt holes, of general shape and fi tment of the part
and if it doesn’t look right, take it back and get it swapped
over for another one. Preferably after you’ve wiped the greasy
fi nger prints off it, Brenno you deadset grub of a human

Before the red mist sets in and you crack it big time,
remember that many parts come out and go back in only one
particular way. In particular CVs – they have small notches in
the bell that mean they’ll only slot back into the diff housing
at particular points in their rotation. It can be tricky to fi gure
this one when you’re trying to remove dirty, grease-covered
parts but remember that unless something is stuck hard, you
shouldn’t have to resort to force to get it out, and defi nitely
not when you’re putting it back in either!
