Australian 4WD Action - June 2018

(vip2019) #1
First let’s start by running
some power for the UHF.
You can do this one of two
ways – either triggered
by the accessories switch
when you turn the key, so
it turns on and off with the
vehicle, or our preferred
way, straight off the
battery. While this means
having to be responsible for
turning the radio on and off
yourself, it has the benefi t
of not needing the key in
the ignition or the vehicle on
when you want to use the
radio, like when you’re at
camp or parked at the top of
a hill waiting for mates. Run
some 2.5mm twin core cable
with an inline 10A fuse from
the battery into the vehicle as
a starting point. Remember to
solder and properly insulate
all connections you make!

Don’t pay hundreds of dollars for some ‘expert’ to install your new UHF,

because doing it at home is easier than you might think

A

UHF is one of
those vital bits of
gear that everyone
should have in
their 4WD. Most of
us start off with hand-helds,
but dealing with fl at batteries
and poor radio reception gets
very old, very quick.
Thankfully, installing your own
UHF at home is way easier
than you might think. In fact,
it’s a very basic 12V install that
only has a couple of key points
you need to know, such as how
to solder a coax connector
properly. The rest is just
running wiring which can be
tedious but isn’t hard. Here’s
how you can install your new
UHF at home this weekend in
just an hour or two.
