Affordable shearling is an oxymoron. But
considering that anything made from it will
l o o k , i n 2 0 ye a r s , m u c h a s i t d o e s th e d ay
you buy it, means it’s just about possible to
justify spending big on a price-per-wear
basis. The second-mortgage price tag is
because it’s so tricky to produce. Shearling
is a single piece of lambskin that’s removed
and tanned with the wool still attached,
giving one side of weather-stopping suede
and another of air-trapping wool to keep
you snug even when it’s Baltic.
