Trim the cushion front evenly
to measure 16^11 ⁄ 4 in square,
raw edge to raw edge.27
Cut two rectangles of
lightweight batting to the
same measurements as the cushion
back rectangles and fuse them to
the wrong side of the pieces.28
Quilt as desired. Yvonne stitched
a1^1 ⁄ 2 in diagonal crosshatch.FINISHING29On one long edge of each
cushion back rectangle, press
under^1 ⁄ 2 in and then 1^1 ⁄ 2 in and
machine stitch these hems in place.
Add two rows of topstitching on the
hems^1 ⁄ 4 in from the folds and previous
stitching lines.30Trim the cushion back
rectangles to measure 10^1 ⁄ 2
x16^1 ⁄ 4 in. With right sides facing up,
overlap the hemmed edges of the
rectangles to form a square, 16^1 ⁄ 4 in.
Refer to Diagram 5. Machine stitch in
the seam allowances of the overlapping
edges to keep them together.31Place the cushion back right
side up on the table and pinthe cushion front over it, right sides
together. Sew right around the edge,
trim the corners slightly and turn the
cover right side out. Push the corners
out gently.32To fi nish, push the insert
inside the cover, going right
into the corners, and overlap the

BLANKET-STITCH
TIP I used to blanket stitch my
appliqué by hand, but I’ve bought
a new sewing machine and now I
can do it by machine, which is so
much faster. However, I found it
left holes where the needle
penetrated the fabric. I’ve just
discovered a titanium machine
needle called Superior Topstitch
and the holes are less obvious
when using this needle. I’m told
that they also last much longer
than regular needles, but it’s too
soon for me to know for sure.Diagram 5
