Oscars) alongside hot brandied
strawberries. Martinis were
75 cents (about $6.50 now); a
bottle of scotch was $15 (about
$130 today).
3 Best actress winner Joanne
Woodward danced with her
husband of two months, Paul
Newman. The Three Faces of
Eve actress designed and sewed
her own dress, spending twoweeks and $100 on the fabric. “I’m
almost as proud of that dress as I
am of my Oscar,” she claimed.
4 Although the Hilton had opened
three years earlier, Academy
president George Seaton
(at microphone) warned guests
“not to put your heels down
too heavily or we’ll have more
footprints here than at Grauman’s,”
as the ballroom was still
in the midst of renovations.

Umeki’s co-star Red Buttons.
7 Seaton, who was AMPAS
president from 1955 to 1958, sent
a telegram to Maurice Chevalier,
via his agent Paul Kohner, urging
an RSVP to the dinner.
