Top 100
Homegrown Legends
As we salute those fellow countrymen and
woman who, past and present, fight for our
freedom this ANZAC Day, MAX delivers some
of the anthems that have contributed to our
rich pedigree of music in Australia. From
rockers Jimmy Barnes and Midnight Oil to
our very own princess of pop Kylie Minogue
(pictured) and John Farnham – who both
performed for Australian troops in war-torn
East Timor in 1999 – hit after hit will be counted
down on the local music channel to help get
you in a patriotic mood. But a Top 100 list
wouldn’t be complete without the men that
helped invent rock‘n’roll, AC/DC, blasting
from your speakers. So flick the lid on a coldie
and kick back with those you care about as
we reflect on the lucky nation we live in
(and the brilliant music
that comes with it).

To immerse oneself in the great opera
works of German composer Richard Wagner
now, some 135 years after his death, is to
experience something extraordinary. His
exquisite Tristan und Isolde is brought to
life by West Australian Symphony Orchestra
in this special. From Prelude to the hauntingly
dramatic final score, Liebestod, the work
has been described as some of the “most
achingly beautiful music ever composed”.
Be carried away, if only for two blissful hours.

Maestro Series:
WASO Plays Wagner
Stepping inside the minds of Into the Badlands
creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar can
be as shocking as it is intriguing. With this
thriller – which is set centuries in the future
- gearing up for a third season, the premise
of the action-drama does make you wonder
if a feudal society called Badlands could
possibly exist many years from now.
When the fast-paced program returns,
the show’s leading man Sunny (Daniel Wu,
pictured) is still grappling with the death of
his partner Veil (Madeleine Mantock) and
the realisation of raising their infant son,
Henry, solo. Poor Sunny can’t catch a break
when Henry contracts a mysterious illness
and he is forced to call on Bajie’s (Nick Frost)
help to make the pilgrimage to the Badlands,
where an all-out war has terrorised the region.

DRAMA
In 2008, when a gaunt Elisabeth Fritzl
escaped the dingy basement she’d been
held captive in by her father, Josef, for more
than 24 years, the world collectively gasped.
This chilling documentary details her ordeal,
eventual freedom and how Josef managed
to deceive authorities for so long.
