A DOG’S
PURPOSE
Saturday April 7 at 8.30pm on Premiere
Movies [401] or catch up On Demand
Be sure to have a box of tissues on
hand for this heartwarming drama
about a dog (voiced by Josh Gad) that is reincarnated
multiple times over five decades – learning important
life lessons in the process. His first earthly experience,
as a stray mongrel, is more short than sweet (he is
euthanised by an unsentimental dog-catcher).
Second time around, ‘Bailey’ gets lucky. Coming
back as a golden retriever, he is rescued from an
overheated pick-up truck by a boy named Ethan
(KJ Apa, pictured). The inseparable pair supports
each other through fire, adolescence, girlfriends,
a dream-shattering injury, a violent domestic situation
and even college, before Ethan’s loyal companion
succumbs to old age in a tearful deathbed scene.
He returns as a corgi, a heroic police dog and
a shaggy St Bernard before finally being reunited
with an older, broken-down Ethan (Dennis Quaid) in
a feel-good conclusion to what has been a beautiful
spiritual journey. Adapted by director Lasse Halström
from the novel by humorist W Bruce Cameron,
A Dog’s Purpose doesn’t miss a trick.
THE TRIP TO SPAIN
Margaret Pomeranz Presents...
Saturday April 14 at 8.30pm on Masterpiece Movies [402]
Having given us a taste of what to expect with their deliciously
deadpan tours of the United Kingdom and Italy, comedians
Rob Brydon and Steve Coogan (pictured from near left) now pack their bags for
Spain. Fame and fatherhood are just two of the many topics up for conversation
as the bantering buddies chew the fat from Cantabria to La Mancha. The duo
also visits central Spain and gives a nod to Don Quixote. Beneath the bruising
bonhomie, Brydon and Coogan offer pithy observations about middle age.
