Towards the end of my athletics
career I lived in London but knew if
I was to move into television, it would have
to be in Australia. I was open to opportunities
and then jumped at the chance to do some
work for Foxtel on the Commonwealth Games
and Olympics. There are pros and cons with
moving from sport into media, but it can be
rewarding if you’re willing to have a crack.
The advice I’d give any aspiring sports
presenter is to cut your teeth in a newsroom.
The best tuition I got was the two years
that I worked at SKY NEWS. I had to write,
produce, edit and present. It was a baptism
of fire, but a great place to learn.
When I moved to FOX SPORTS to present
rugby league, it was hard at first and I can’t
say I did it flawlessly. I made every mistake
live to air but it made me a better broadcaster.
Watching as a supporter is different to
opening up a conversation about
the game, but being a rugby
league fan definitely helps.
There was some learning
in the position. I possibly
pushed a bit too hard at the
beginning, but you quickly
learn those lessons. While
you need to build credibility,
my role is to get the opinions
and analysis from former
players who know the
game back-to-front.
I’m still learning,
but the environment
at FOX LEAGUE is
so good and there’s
a commitment to
showing the game
in the best light.
The mantra is to
have fun to add
to the viewers’
experience.
FROM THE TRACK
TO TELEVISION
THE PATH FROM ATHLETE TO TV PRESENTER IS WELL
TRAVELLED. BUT FOR OLYMPIAN MATT SHIRVINGTON,
HOSTING ON FOX LEAGUE HAS UNIQUE CHALLENGES
IN MY OPINION
