MAZE RUNNER:

THE DEATH CURE (M)

APRIL 25

When this final instalment in the dystopian

Maze Runner trilogy finally made it to screens, it was

a relief for many reasons. Production was shut down

abruptly in 2016 when star Dylan O’Brien (pictured

left) was injured on set in a life-threatening accident.

After reportedly falling into the path of a car while

filming a stunt, the movie’s release was pushed back

by almost a year so O’Brien could recover

and return to finish. While the circumstances

were shocking, the release of the sci-fi thriller

was worth it – ending the saga with a bang.

Michelle Williams and Mark Wahlberg

(both pictured) star in this drama based

on the true story of the kidnapping of

John Paul Getty III. Believing it was a hoax,

his billionaire oil tycoon grandfather

(Christopher Plummer) initially refused to

pay the ransom – with dire consequences.

Journey to the Land of the Dead

with spirited young boy Miguel

in this moving animated adventure from

Disney Pixar. Despite his family’s baffling

ban on music, Miguel (Anthony Gonzalez)

dreams of being a musician and, when

a strange series of events leads him to

the afterlife, he discovers the true history

of his heritage with help from a skeleton

named Héctor (Gael García Bernal).

Drawing heavily on Mexican culture

with a beautiful message about keeping

departed loved ones in our hearts, this is

a groundbreaking film in its representation

of Latinos and took home the Oscar for

Best Animated Feature Film last month.

DARKEST HOUR (PG)

APRIL 18

Former Prime Minister Winston Churchill

is having a moment. But despite the

abundance of stories out there focusing

on the resolute British icon, this

drama depicting his defining

era as the newly appointed leader

who guided the UK through early

WWII stands above the rest – much

like Churchill himself. Gary Oldman

(pictured) is transformed in his

Oscar-winning role as the formidable

man who unwaveringly changed

the course of history.

It’s officially the grand finale

for the Barden Bellas. After

winning the World Championships

the disbanded sorority sisters aren’t

doing so well, so they come together

for one last time to participate in

a USO (United Services Organization)

tour. Fat Amy (Rebel Wilson, pictured

left) and the a cappella girls are going

global as they compete with a group

(led by Aussie Ruby Rose) who can

play instruments. This is a fun swan

song that’s full of comedy and music

  • with a bit of action thrown in.
