17. Guests of the Kirov Workers

On 1 May 1942, Ivan Dobrik and I were summoned to divisional
headquarters. Back in the regiment we had been told: ‘Report to
Matveyev, head of the divisional political department.’
Ivan and I  had long been acquainted with Regimental
Commissar Matveyev, a short, lean man with the upright bearing
of a veteran regular military officer, handsome features and a
stern and intelligent look. In the regiment we saw Matveyev often,
and every one of our troops and officers respected and liked him.
He was demanding, but always fair. He was unpretentious in his
behaviour, fond of the troops and they repaid him in kind.
‘You are going as divisional representatives to the Kirov works,
which sponsor us; you’ve been invited to a formal gathering for
May Day,’ said Matveyev after greeting us. ‘You are required to
be there at 1400 hours. It’s possible that you’ll have to say a few
words. Get going now, or you’ll be late. Don’t hang around there
too long – it’s not an appropriate time for that... And report as
soon as you get back. Here is your authorisation. Nikolaev is in
cha rge.’
