7 QUESTIONS WITH JARDINE HANSEN
- What did eight-year-old Jardine dream of
being? I was lucky enough to have my own
horse and I’d dream of going to the
Olympics to compete in eventing. - Tell us something about flowers we won’t
know. In the Victorian era, they had
a “language of flowers”, where each flower
had a precise meaning and they’d send each
other secret messages via blooms.
3. Did your parents influence your career
path? They’ve always been very supportive
of my pursuits and instilled in me the
belief that you should just do what you
love, work at it and you’ll be successful or
happy (which I think is the same thing). - Describe the creative scene in Tasmania
Tassie feels alive with possibilities.
I think because there’s so much space,
people have the capacity to create
wonderful things. - What perfume do you wear? Maison Louis
No.4 Marie Bois de Balincourt. I find I’m
drawn to earthy, woody scents. - Name one thing that would surprise
people about you. I only like dancing in my
kitchen with my boyfriend. I can also
recite the alphabet backwards really fast. - Other than flowers, what’s your favourite
smell in the world? I find the smell of
horses and leather very nostalgic. R
Fragrant fantasy The limited-edition Ecoya x Jardine
Botanic Green Leaves & Geranium candles and diffusers
are layered with scented geranium and earthy notes of
oud, amber and cedarwood. “I had to include geranium,
it’s been a long-held obsession of mine,” Jardine says.
Flower power In her botanical styling work,
Jardine is fond of layering locally grown, seasonal
flowers in a considered colour palette. “I couldn’t
see myself doing anything else,” she admits.
WITH A NAME LIKE HERS, Jardine Hansen was destined to work with flowers
- though it nearly didn’t happen. After a childhood spent exploring the garden
with her “green-thumbed grandmother”, in a surprise twist she studied sport
science at uni, before making her way back to flowers. “It took meeting my now
dear friend [florist] Nicolette Camille to realise I could find a career in flowers,”
she says. Inspired by rambling gardens and the moody still-life paintings by
Dutch masters, Jardine’s work has a raw beauty to it, making her a favourite
for events and weddings. Her recent collaboration with Ecoya has seen her
segue into home fragrance, creating a limited-edition candle and diffuser scent,
Green Leaves & Geranium. “I was so excited by this collaboration,” Jardine
says. “I hope people will feel as though they’re wandering around the garden,
brushing past stems and filling their lungs with scent.”
