alone now, so it took a full 12 months before the
perfect starting point was found — in Texas, of all
places. Chuck at Chuck’s Restoration Supplies was
an old workmate of Steve’s dad, and soon had it on
a boat and dropped to Steve’s doorstep for the real
fun to begin in June 2017.
While Steve’s original plan was to go for a dual
quad Quick Fuel carb set-up, engine builder Mike
had recently built a bunch of fuel-injected Hemis,
including a trophy truck for the Baja 1000 with
FAST electronic fuel injection (EFI). This led Mike
to develop a barometric dual manifold-absolute-
pressure (MAP) sensor set-up, which FAST now runs
with its new software. Mike has since built more
FiTech systems and prefers the FiTech features and
reliability. So, with the magic horsepower number in
mind, Steve followed the guru’s recommendations
and ended up with a twin FiTech injection system,
which he describes as “pretty much two Dominators
of flow but with air–fuel ratio and timing control”.
Local panel-beating legend Paul Knight was
kind enough to lend Steve a hoist for a week in
exchange for a beer-fridge top-up, and, with
help from his good mate and expert car builder
Jimmy Hotton, Steve didn’t take long to transform
the car into the monster you see today.
