Class three was a Holden versus Ford final, with
Dean Toombs taking the win for Ford lovers,
thanks only to his quicker reaction time over
Dave Hickford’s Holden HZ ute.
Class four would see the same again; the slower
car — this time Peter Carmichael’s Jaguar —
beating Dean Hinton’s faster Falcon, due to
Hinton sleeping on the line.
Class five may have looked rigged, but
Glen Collins drove the BurgerFuel-sponsored
’69 Camaro to a fair-and-square victory over
Jeremy Climo’s Holden in a very close final.
The fastest pass of the day would have to go
Paul Davison in his Top Alcohol dragster; he
put on a hell of a show for the crowd with a
few tyre-frying passes. Fellow Wellingtonian
Graham Christison also had his dragster out to
play — comparatively tame beside Davison’s, but
impressive nonetheless.
Of course, it wouldn’t be a street drag event
without a little bit of drama — nothing too
major, thankfully: Greg Fuge’s sideways
Camaro knocking the lights and Eddie Trybula
unintentionally showing off the new motor in
his blown ’57 Chev with the tilt-front flipping
forwards at the end of his burnout.
Local racers Barry Smith, Rana Davis, and
Brian Hughes used the event for some great
test passes for their recently completed cars.
Barry Smith’s turned the tyres in anger for the
first time and impressed all by running arrow
straight on every pass. At the other end of
