Australia enjoyed an incredible 500 GP year with
Mick Doohan (Honda) and Daryl Beattie (Suzuki)
finishing the season first and second respectively.
It’s the only time Aussie riders have done a one-two
in the premier class.
In the Superbike World Championship, Troy
Corser and Anthony Gobert waved the flag,
finishing second and fourth. However, neither
could get close to Carl Fogarty, who wrapped up the
series with an incredible 13 wins.
As you can tell from the cover, the Daytona 200 in
the United States was still a big deal in 1995, with
Kawasaki-mounted Scott Russell winning for the
second year in a row.

How many?
That’s the number of pages filled by the
transcript for the OJ Simpson case. After a
nine-month trial, Simpson was famously
found not guilty of murdering his ex-wife
Nicole and her friend Ron Goldman. Defence
lawyer in the ‘Case of the Century’ was Robert
Kardashian, father of you know who.

Era tech
Back in 1995, a new Windows operating
system was a big deal – big enough for
Microsoft to hire Jay Leno to co-host the
launch. The update introduced the Start
button, file names longer than eight
characters, and that famous start-up
sound, written by Brian Eno. The new software came
either on CD, or on 13 floppy discs.

Round the traps

News Serbs seized control of Srebrenica and massacred
local Muslims. It is now thought that between 7000 and
8000 men were killed following the fall of the town – the
worst atrocity in Europe since World War II. In Australia,
Telecom changed its name to Telstra.
Sport Manchester United’s Eric Cantona was fined
£20,000 and banned from playing football for nine months
for a kung fu-style attack on a fan who allegedly insulted
his mother. Cantona was also sentenced to two weeks in prison, which was reduced
to 120 hours of community service. And 19-year-old Tiger Woods won the US
Amateur Golf Championship.
Music Fancy seeing a line-up of Nine Inch Nails, Faith No More, Lou Reed, Tool,
Pennywise, Live, The Flaming Lips, The Tea Party, Powderfinger and Body Count?
Incredibly, the Alternative Nation festivals held in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne
featured all these artists and more, but were commercial disasters. Alternative
Nation was never heard of again.
