Questioning the
numbers

Thanks for another year of
qualitymagazinecontent,
and extra appreciation for
thehistoricalarticlesthat
we’re increasingly seeing –
a great inclusion.
Ireadwithinterestthe
Aprilia Shiver 900 review
and would like to make a
couple of suggestions.
It occurred to me that
thearticleneededmore
discussion of competing
bikes, as well as a more
precise comparison
betweenthenewShiver and
thebikeitreplaces.
Your reporter seemed
prettyclearthatthe900
Shiver is less “dull” and
quoted lots of specifics
(from the press release)
suggesting that there were
many ways in which engine
power and torque had
been improved. So I was
surprisedtoseethatthe
numbers appear to tell a
different story.
Despitea20percent
capacity increase, the new
bikehasamere1kW(1.3 per
cent)increaseinpower, and
a slightly more respectable
9Nm(11percent)increase

intorque–albeitmade
marginally lower (500rpm)
in the rev range.
Conversely, your Buyers
Guide tells us that the price
has increased from $12,800
to $15,200 – an extra
$2400, or 18.9 per cent.
Notwithstanding some
other detail improvements,
I’d suggest that some
questioning of the value
proposition of the new bike
by comparison with the
old was in order, as well as
commentary on the power-
sapping effect of the need
to comply with Euro 4.
Similarly, the MT-09 is
a bike that Shiver buyers
would be likely looking at
as an alternative. Again,
the Buyers Guide tells me
that the dry weight of the
Shiver and the kerb weight
of the MT-09 are similar,
so the Aprilia is probably
20-25 kg heavier, while the
Yamaha has around 14kW
more power and is nearly
$3000 cheaper than the
new Shiver. Surely a few
comments in the text to this
effect, if not a breakout box
giving a couple of relevant
comparisons like this,
would add some value?
Looking forward to next
year’s mags.

G’day Rex, thank you for the
letter, and for keeping us
on our toes. Steve’s test of
the Shiver’s sister bike, the
Dusoduro 900, is in this issue. I
hope you enjoy the read. Chris
