Goodbyes and

goosebumps
MANY OF YOU will be lucky enough to be still enjoying your Christmas
and New Year break from the salt mines. For others, including the AMCN
crew, we are already back at it. Gassit Garage cranked back into life at
7.30am on New Year’s Day – ouch!
Part of my duties as editor is to read the mag before it
goes to print, but that doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy
stretching out on the sofa on a Sunday afternoon
with a cold drink and a copy of AMCN in
hand. It’s a chance to read it purely for
entertainment.
Each issue I try to pinpoint a favourite
story or test, but it’s always hard with
the Yea rbook because it’s packed with
so many great features. High on my
list this year was Part 1 of the Magic
Mountain feature by Hamish Cooper
and Phil Aynsley. These two guys lived
the golden era of motorcycling, and it
shines through in their words and pics.
Just like their ‘Days of Thunder’ Amaroo
Park feature in Vol 67 No 07, Hamish and
Phil knew they’d get only one chance to tell
such an epic story. If you enjoyed Part 1, you’re
going to love Part 2, which starts on page 78 this issue.
Capturing the atmosphere that was the annual Easter Bathurst weekend
during the 1980s in only 2000 words and a selection of pics takes the
skill of a real journalist and the eye of a professional photographer. I have
just finished reading it, and it gave me goosebumps.
As we sent this issue to print, we also said farewell to AMCN’s super
sub-editor Mark Vender. MV has managed to escape the padded rooms
of Gassit HQ to pursue a new opportunity that will scratch his creative
itch. Mark’s ability to turn a page full of nonsensical sentences (usually
mine) into journalistic art will be sorely missed. I know I speak on behalf
of every staff member and contributor who has had their work ‘fixed’ by
MV when I say, “Thanks, mate, for always giving 110 per cent.”
