TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR V APOEL FC
round, first leg at White Hart Lane. Goals from
Younes Kaboul, Michael Dawson, Robbie Keane
and Darren Bent had put us four up by the break.
In the second half, Jermain Defoe scored twice,
either side of a strike from Famagusta’s Anton
Zlogar, to complete a 6-1 victory. Our team was:
Spurs: Cerny, Chimbonda, Assou-Ekotto
(Bale 81), Kaboul, Dawson, Zokora, Huddlestone,
Malbranque (Taarabt 70), Lennon, Keane (Defoe
63), Bent. Substitutes (not used): Robinson,
Jenas, Berbatov, Rocha.
Brazilian midfielder Fabio de Matos Pereira,
known as ‘Fabinho’, gave Famagusta the lead
in the second leg of the tie at the Antonis
Papadopoulos Stadium in Larnaca on October 4,
- Substitute Keane levelled with 12 minutes
of the match as we secured our safe passage into
the group stage of that season’s competition.
We went on to reach the last 16 of tournament,
before losing out in a penalty shootout against
PSV Eindhoven in the Netherlands, after a
1-1 aggregate draw. We lined up as follows
for the game in Cyprus:
Spurs: Robinson, Stalteri, Lee YP (Keane
75), Gardner, Dawson, Zokora, Huddlestone,
Boateng (Bale 69), Malbranque, Defoe, Bent
(Taarabt 85). Substitutes (not used): Cerny,
Kaboul, Dawkins, Mills.
We returned to Larnaca on August 21, 2014,
to take on AEL Limassol in the first leg of our
Europa League play-off. Adrián Sardinero gave
us an early scare, putting the home side ahead
after just 14 minutes. New signing Roberto
Soldado equalised in the second half before
Harry Kane netted with 10 minutes of the match
remaining to send us back to London with a one
goal advantage. Our team was:
Spurs: Lloris, Naughton, Vertonghen, Dier,
Davies, Townsend (Lamela 72), Paulinho (Chadli
59), Bentaleb, Holtby (Dembele 66), Soldado,
Kane. Substitutes (not used): Friedel, Rose,
Dawson, Sandro.
A week later, goals from Kane and Paulinho
and an Andros Townsend penalty saw us win
3-0 at White Hart Lane and complete a 5-
aggregate victory in the tie. We were eliminated
from the UEFA Europa League at the Round of
32 stage during that season, going down to a
3-1 aggregate defeat to Fiorentina. Lining up
for the N17 fixture was:
Spurs: Lloris, Naughton, Chiriches (Veljkovic
86), Kaboul, Davies, Townsend, Sandro
(Holtby 78), Dembele, Paulinho, Lennon, Kane.
Substitutes (not used): Friedel, Rose, Dier,
Chadli, Adebayor.
CYPRUS
SPURS
In 2006, the Cyprus Spurs Supporters
Club (CSSC) was formed, becoming
the first official supporters’ club of a
Premier League team to be based on
the Mediterranean island. The group
meet regularly to watch our televised
matches at pubs in Larnaca, Nicosia,
Limassol, Famagusta and Paphos.
CSSC have been visited by a number
of our legends over the years including
Martin Chivers and Graham Roberts.
Our supporters will be familiar with a
Cypriot flag, bearing two Spurs crests
and the words ‘Cyprus Spurs’, that
is on display at many of our home
and away matches. Owned by Alex
Kyriacou – a London-born Spurs fan
of Cypriot decent – the flag made its
debut at one of our matches back in
- It was regularly on display at
the Paxton Road end at White Hart
Lane thereafter, up to and including
the Lane's Finale against Manchester
United in May. The flag – which is in its
second incarnation after the original
was lost – could also be seen in the
away end at our UEFA Champions
League fixtures at APOEL and Real
Madrid earlier this season.
