REMEMBER WHEN...

...we last played in European competition on this day. It was only five years ago, as we welcomed
Greek outfit Panathinaikos to White Hart Lane, needing a draw to progress from Group J and into
the knockout stages of the Europa League. We were unbeaten going into matchday six, with away
draws against Lazio, NK Maribor and Panathinaikos, while we drew with the Italians at home and
beat Maribor 3-1. And when Emmanuel Adebayor raced onto Clint Dempsey’s lovely pass to open
the scoring just before the half-hour mark, a safe passage to the next stage looked assured. But the
Greeks hit back after the break with a thunderous header from Zeca and had they taken the lead,
we would have been heading for an early exit from the competition. Fortunately though, an own goal
from their keeper Orestis Karnezis on 76 minutes, followed by a smart finish from Jermain Defoe
six minutes later, secured the win and runners-up spot in the group behind Lazio. After subsequent
wins against Lyon and Inter Milan, we went out on penalties to Basle in the quarter-finals.
