he late Ian Moores served both of
tonight’s clubs during his playing
days, enjoying great success in
Cyprus with APOEL.
Our Champions League
opponents paid tribute to Ian at our game in
Nicosia in September as they remembered a
player fondly referred to as ‘The Legend’. A
special presentation was made to his sons Mike
and Richard before the match, while APOEL’s
supporters produced a wonderful tifo in honour
of Ian, who spent five years with the club from
1983 to 1988, having previously been at White
Hart Lane for a couple of seasons.
Born at Newcastle-under-Lyme on October
5, 1954, Ian Richard Moores attended the
local Edward Orme Secondary School and

represented Staffordshire County Schoolboys.
He signed schoolboy forms for Stoke City and
was subsequently taken on as an Apprentice at
the Victoria Ground where he had supported
the club from the terraces.
Initially, he played on the left wing but during
an ‘A’ team fixture was switched to a central role
due to a colleague being injured and notched
a second half hat-trick. At six feet two inches
tall and weighing 13 stone eight pounds, he
was of ideal build to lead the attack.
In June, 1972, he signed professional forms
for Stoke and made the first of his 225 Football
League appearances in a 1-1 draw at Leicester
City on April 16, 1974. Over the next couple of
years he took his tally to 14 goals in 50 League
outings and also scored once in seven cup

games, ironically in our third round FA Cup
replay defeat at Stoke during January, 1976.
Ian played twice for the England Under-23
side during 1975, facing Wales at Wrexham
in January and Czechoslovakia at Trnava in
October.
On August 28, 1976, he arrived at Tottenham
for a reputed £75,000 fee and marked his debut
for us with a goal in our League Cup second
