SWANS 2 LLANELLY 1
WELSH CUP
The Swans were handed a home draw
against Llanelly in the second round of
the Welsh Cup. The visitors took a
shock lead inside the opening minute
and held on to that advantage until
half-time. But the Swans were not to
be denied and second-half goals from
Willie Messer and Billy Ball saw them
through.

CHELSEA 1 SWANS 0
DIVISION TWO
Fighting for points to move off the
bottom of the league table, the Swans
travelled to London to take on high-
flying Chelsea. Without a win in their
previous eight away fixtures, the
visitors played well above their
position and dominated large parts of
the match. But, as in recent games,
the forwards lacked the cutting edge in
the final third, and a fortunate goal
right on half-time sealed the points for
the hosts.

CHESTERFIELD 1 SWANS 2
DIVISION TWO
The Swans travelled to Chesterfield full
of confidence following a
comprehensive 5-1 victory over
Burnley last time out. Despite falling
behind after just five minutes, they
responded well with the in-form Cyril
Pearce drawing them level before the
break. The visitors dictated matters
after the interval and their pressure
eventually paid off with Ronnie
Williams scoring the winner.

The Swans’ fight to remain in the
second division continued when they
welcomed Leicester City to Vetch
Field. The hosts played some good
football in the first half and went into
the break all square at 1-1 after Joe
Payne’s strike. A similar pattern
ensued in the second half, but the
visitors were much more clinical in
front of goal. And although Sam
McCrory and Jack Haines added to
Payne’s first-half effort for the hosts, a
hat-trick from Jack Lee at the other
end saw the Foxes edge a seven-goal
thriller.

SWANS 5 ROTHERHAM UNITED 0
DIVISION TWO
After a strong start to the season, the
Swans’ enthusiasm had dimmed and
they found themselves struggling for
consistency in mid-table. The omens
were not looking too good ahead of
welcoming league leaders Rotherham,
but Ronnie Turnbull settled the hosts’
nerves when he broke the deadlock
before half-time. It was all one-way
traffic after the break as Turnbull got
his second, while Frank Scrine also
bagged a brace and Alf Bellis
