The significance of

the scandal is about

speaking up and putting

an end to ALL the Harvey

Weinsteins in the world.

THE EFFECTS IN INDIA
‘The Times Of India’ did a recent
article about the rise of aspiring
actresses who have come forward
to complain against sexual
harassment to CINTAA post
Harvey Weinstein. Even women
like Kangana Ranaut, Vidya Balan
and Raveena Tandon have boldly
spoken up about sexual offenders
and sleazy men in the industry,
and how women should not put
up with it any more.

BEYOND WEINSTEIN
But the real signifi cance of the fallout goes
beyond Harvey Weinstein. As Oprah Winfrey
put it: “If we make this moment all about Harvey
Weinstein, we’ve already lost.” Indeed, the
signifi cance of the scandal is about speaking up
and putting an end to ALL the Harvey Weinsteins
in the world – those who occupy positions of
power and use it to exploit, humiliate and
traumatize their victims – just because they
can. And not only the one’s who do it, but also
the ones who keep mum and facilitate it.
Soon after the scandal broke out, a social media
campaign emerged where thousands upon
thousands of victims who were sick of suffering
silently, fi nally found their voices and joined an
online campaign with #MeToo added to their
accounts, and became a worldwide chorus
against sexual abuse, far beyond Hollywood.
It also resulted in a wave of similar allegations
against and ousters of powerful men around
the world, called ‘The Weinstein Effect’. Two
prominent men who have been ousted from their
roles are Amazon Studio’s chief Roy Price and
Academy Award winning actor Kevin Spacey.

cut off from all Netflix
productions.
