I’m 38 and have been married for 12 years. I have two
kids aged eight and four. My husband and I have always
been proactive when it comes to sex, but lately he has
been complaining about the lack of wetness during sex.
I too have been experiencing some pain which makes the
experience uncomfortable. How do I handle this situation?

Lavina Gomes, Mumbai

When younger women complain of vaginal dryness
during sex, it is because they are not sexually aroused.
Lack of lubrication is the cause of painful sex. Lavina, I
suggest you give yourself time for adequate foreplay, as
women take longer to reach the level of arousal needed
to orgasm. Good foreplay serves both a physical and
emotional purpose, and will help prepare your mind
and body for sex. Kissing, hugging, caressing etc
create lubrication in the vagina, which is important
for comfortable intercourse. This might not be easy
considering daily stress and a lack of time, but it is
vital to enjoy good foreplay to be ready for great sex.
Your husband needs to understand this as well –
his complaining will not make matters better. Do
also avoid certain hygiene products like feminine
sprays and harsh soaps, swimming pool and hot
tub chemicals and harsh washing powders.
You might also want to check if any drug
treatments such as allergy, cold medications
and some antidepressants could be causing
the drying out of your vaginal tissues. Using
topical lubricants, which are similar to
natural lubrication and are applied to the
area around the lips (vulva) and vagina just
before intercourse, is a good solution for
those occasional dry times.
