03: DESIGN SOUTH YORKSHIRE HOUSE
LOCATION SOUTH YORKSHIRE, UK
Beginning life in the 1920s, this large
residential dwelling in South Yorkshire bears
little resemblance — except for the front
facade — to its former incarnation as a movie
cinema. Undergoing a complete overhaul,
homeowners Gwyn and Kate ap Harri turned
this local landmark into a daring, minimalist
concrete-laden home for their family. The
unique board-set concrete walls that spread
throughout the house are also featured in
the master bedroom, giving it an industrial
fl avour. The soft grey tone of the concrete
walls have informed the room’s moody colour
palette, creating a restful space that is saved
from being cold by the warmth of timber
fl oors and simple bedside tables.

04: DESIGN LAVA TIVOLI TERRACE
LOCATION PADDINGTON, SYDNEY
A testament to its unique brief, this simply
styled bedroom makes a bold statement
in retro chic. Sitting on the second fl oor of
a terrace house in Paddington, this master
bedroom features an entire wall of cabinetry
built around the existing fi replace — an
architectural element of the original home. The
natural tones of white and timber are a subtle
backdrop for the pops of colour and statement
pieces scattered throughout the house, like
the Kina pendant light by David Trubridge that
layers a textural concern over the smooth fi nish
of this otherwise sparse room. The original
narrow doors out to the balcony and transom
window above bring in plenty of light and
provide an antique contrast to the retro vibe.
