05: DESIGN AMERICAN BARNS
LOCATION AUCKLAND
Being in the centre of a contentious build was
not a position homeowner Morella Lascurain
cherished. So for the sake of family harmony,
she stepped back from the process, allowing
husband Marty to deal with construction
while she plotted decorative detail. A good
move, judging by the vibrant outcome of
this home’s rustic industrial decor. With a
great deal of texture already at play due to
the prodigious use of timber in this build,
pops of colour were used to add warmth to
the bedrooms and accessories like colourful
rugs were employed to soften the nature of
the architecture. This approach produced a
master bedroom that is a tapestry of colour
and tactile objects that work in harmony with
the space, sitting subtly in the foreground so
as not to detract from the magnifi cent views
on off er through fl oor-to-ceiling windows.

06: DESIGN LONGVIEW HOUSE
LOCATION WILDES MEADOW,
NEW SOUTH WALES
Consisting of four bedrooms, with views
to die for, this home in country New South
Wales is a prescription for a good night’s
sleep. “Each bedroom was to have an ensuite
bathroom and two of the bedrooms were
to be in a separate guest section,” recalls
architect/homeowner Roger Vidler of his
design brief. Each room was also required to
feature a view of the surrounding landscape.
Mission accomplished! Ceiling-high windows
form long lengths of the walls in each
bedroom, allowing light to fl ood the spaces
and bring the views right to the doorstep.
Block-out blinds aid a more intimate
atmosphere and help to regulate the home’s
internal climate. The bedrooms at Longview
can also be opened up to the outdoor
pavilions to create a sense of connectedness
across the entire home.
