08: DESIGN NORTH MANLY HOUSE
LOCATION NORTH MANLY, SYDNEY
Formerly a single-storey brick bungalow,
the large-scale renovation undertaken on
this house increased the interior spaces
exponentially. Added to the building was
a master retreat, a highlight of the project
and a true oasis separated from the main
house. It boasts enviable views that can be
enjoyed from the private deck and includes
a spectacular bedroom ensuite and lounge
area. “The ensuite is spacious and luxurious
and can be fully opened to the outside deck,
but remains private because of the timber
screen surrounding the exterior of the house,”
says architect Kristin Utz. The natural palette
of the home’s interior decor contributes to the

relaxing vibe of the space, sitting in perfect
harmony with the surrounding landscape.

09: DESIGN HEMP HOUSE
LOCATION TARANAKI, NEW ZEALAND
Though built along traditional-looking lines,
this unique rural home is packed with new
and unusual materials that question building
conventions. One such example is the master
bedroom, which is coated internally with
latex-based paint while the exterior of the
wing is encased in a graphite mesh embedded
in the plaster topcoat to shield the bedroom

from electromagnetic frequencies (EMF). The
windows are also fi tted with special sheers
with a high metallic content that also works
to block EMF radiation. Though the building
materials used are unconventional, they do
make for a healthier environment and the
traditional decor makes the light-fi lled master
suite a cosy place to snuggle in and watch the
surrounding landscape.

10: DESIGN NORTHCOTE HOUSE
LOCATION NORTHCOTE, VICTORIA
A unique roofl ine defi nes the space in this
newly constructed bedroom. One of two new
bedrooms added to the second fl oor of an old
Edwardian cottage during a major renovation,
this bedroom pulls in an abundance of natural
light thanks to a waterfall skylight set in the
ceiling. “The contemporary design of the
extension adopts the same roof angle as the
original house, with the use of a dark colour
silhouetting the original roofl ine, reinforcing
the prominence of the heritage facade within
the existing pattern of the street,” says
architect Sally Timmins. Simple furnishings
pick up the tone of the timber trim, which
warms up the room and contributes to the
modern, clean aesthetic practised throughout
the rest of the home.
