14: DESIGN MOUNT ALBERT HOUSE
LOCATION MOUNT ALBERT, AUCKLAND
This modern family courtyard home is on a
small parcel of land, but has plenty of outdoor
space to enjoy. This is largely due to the
talents of innovative architect Jan Bernau. She
designed a series of three interlocking cubes,
one for sleeping, one for living and one for
storage. There are three subsequent courtyard
spaces, small clothes airing space, an entry
courtyard and an outdoor living courtyard.
Here, the indoor living space completely opens
up to the outdoors, creating a seamless fl ow
between the two areas. Outside there’s room
to dine, take a spa and toss a ball in a hoop,
all among plenty of greenery.

15: DESIGN LITTLE HARTLEY HOUSE
LOCATION BLUE MOUNTAINS,
NEW SOUTH WALES
Despite being built in the middle of a bushfi re
zone in the Blue Mountains, this small
weekender celebrates its location with a wide
deck that off ers its inhabitants a place to sit
and enjoy the natural outlook. The clean line
of sight that runs through this house beckons
you to the fl oor-to-ceiling windows that
frame the view and draw you outside. The
use of natural weathered timber helps the
outdoor area to blend harmoniously with its
surroundings and acts as the perfect foil for
the home’s Corten-clad exterior.
