05: DESIGN LONGVIEW HOUSE
LOCATION WILDES MEADOW,
NEW SOUTH WALES
This rural property is nestled in a lush
fertile landscape in New South Wales. The
homeowner, architect Roger Vidler, took two
years to design his home. Given the rural
location, Roger could do as he pleased, with no
city building constraints to comply with. The
resulting home is testament to great design
and innovation. The property can be opened
up or closed off for climate control. There’s
ample natural light, and block-out blinds
create a more private atmosphere that helps
to regulate the temperatures indoors. Step
outside and there’s a vegetable garden chock
full of leafy produce. Raised garden beds add
symmetry and a sense of structure to the
space — and they’re also kinder on the knees!

06: DESIGN LITTLE HARTLEY HOUSE
LOCATION BLUE MOUNTAINS,
NEW SOUTH WALES
For friends Francois and Dominik, a
weekender, built under the guidance of
architect Ruth Kealy of Urban Possible
Architects, was always going to be chock
full of eco-savvy features. At the building
site, trees were pruned, not razed. “This
positioning allowed the tree canopy to be
trimmed rather than cleared and enabled
the house to tread lightly on the site,” says

Ruth. The house is compact, but there’s
plenty of room for friends and family in this
comfortable abode that has a 20,000-litre
water tank, prefabricated lightweight roof
construction, solar hot water, recycled
hardwood cladding and a double insulated

wall system on the western front.
