14: DESIGN THE RUSTY HOUSE
LOCATION NORTHLAND
This modern maintenance-free home is
constructed from 150 sheets of rusty steel, a
product designed to weather the environment
in which the house stands, close to the ocean.
The steel is designed to rust up to a certain
level and no further, then it cocoons the home’s
interior, forming an impressive weather-proof
barrier. The home’s design had to work with
the surrounds to embrace it. It has a real
connection to the little beach settlement, with
its roof form and other features showing that

building green can be cutting edge as well.

15: DESIGN CLIFFTOP HOUSE
LOCATION HILLSBOROUGH
This modern box home pays homage to its
beautiful natural surroundings. The owners
wanted a residence that was treehouse-like in
its proximity to the bushland around it, given
that it soars skyward. Homeowner Hamish

Divett says architect Tim Dorrington got very
up-close and personal with the surrounds to
help him create the design. “He was climbing
ladders we had propped up against trees so
he could get the exact feel of the land and
its surroundings,” says Hamish. The home is
a three-fl oor pole house with fl oor-to-ceiling
windows. The owners also chose an earthy
palette of materials and natural rock, with
pure-white Dekton on the kitchen bench.
