ALTERNATIVE CAKES

approximately thirty.
19 Using 4g of brown flower paste,
make two buckles using the frame
mould. Then roll out two pieces for
the back bars of the buckles and small
pieces cut at an angle for the prongs.
20 Take 60g of caramel sugarpaste
and make four strips 2cm wide and
14cm long. Give two of the pieces
curved ends cutting 2cm off at the
other end and using the quilting tool,
add stitching detail around the edges.
Add holes along the centre of the
strips with the end of a paintbrush.
21 Add texture using the leather mat.
22 Repeat quilting and texturing to
other longer strips. First glue the
longer strips to the cake, then the
shorter on top. Make sure not to glue
all the way down, you need to be able
to add the buckles. Approximately
2-3cm from the end, glue your
buckles back bar in between the two
strap pieces. The buckle needs to be
level with one of the holes.

23 Glue on the buckle piece and
the prong into the hole. Paint the
buckles gold.

TOP TIER
24 Cover top tier in 200g of caramel
colour paste and texture with the
leather mat. With 50g of brown
paste, make a strap as before,
glue to base and make a piece 4cm
for the end of the strap. Let it firm
slightly at an angle and glue to the
side. The join will be hidden later.

FIGURE
25 Take 35g of flesh coloured paste
and roll into a ball. Using a dowel
press across in an arch shape.
26 With your thumbs, press two eye
sockets and begin to pinch a nose.
27 Again with your thumbs, pinch in
a chin shape.
28 Using the sugarshaper bond
tool, roll against the nose to build
up the shape.

12 Press the two sides together,
pressing firmly. Carefully remove the
wing from the mould and set aside
to firm. Repeat.
13 On one side only, paint the flat
areas of the wing using turquoise
paste colour and a little cooled
boiled water.
14 Paint the raised area in gold.
15 Glue to the cog and pin to dry.
16 Using flower paste and the
keyhole mould, make a keyhole
using part of the mould only,
trimming so it will fit between
the wings. Paint gold and glue in
between the wings.
17 Colour 60g of flower paste dark
brown and roll out into strips cutting
3 x 1cm wide and approximately
24cm long. Glue one around the
base, one around the top and then
one inside on the top of the cake.
18 With the mould from the Old
Piping Bag, make studs from 7g of
brown flower paste,
