MY MATES DON’T CALL ME CAPTAIN BLING FOR NOTHING! IF IT

WASN’T BLACK OR SHINY, IT DIDN’T BELONG IN THE CAR

NEXT!
STEPHEN is midway through his next build, an LX
Torana SL/R four-door (below). “I’m taking my
time with this one too, but with my son Brett’s
input,” he says. “It’s getting the panelwork done
at the moment.
“This will be more of a driver, with much the
same driveline as the SS including the six-speed
and nine-inch, but it’ll be carby-fed. The Holden
V8 was out of a Commodore ute, and was already
stroked with only about 1000 hours on it.
“While the interior will also be the same, the
exterior will be white with the
SL/R decals.”

INTERIOR:
Stephen sourced a set of hatchback seats,
then had Matt Hinton from Prestige Plus
Upholstery cover the pews and trims in
slate-coloured leather with grey golfball
inserts. Craig Wilson refurbished the SL/R
dash, which is full of factory SS gauges and
topped off with an SS tiller. The fellas have
done a stellar job of making the six-speed
look like a factory fitment

CONSOLE:
Stephen opted for a Tremec Magnum six-
speed manual, a decision that caused a few
headaches. “I figured that it’d provide good
fuel economy. But getting the tunnel in the
right position so that the console would sit
right was frustrating. We had to use a Ford
housing to get the gearbox to sit up in the
floor. There was a lot of pulling it in and
out, and we did it all off of the shed floor –
even the exhaust we did under the car, on
the ground”
