Street Machine Australia — January 2018

(Romina) #1

G

’DAY! And thanks for being with us
again as 2018 looms ahead like
the open highway in your favourite
car flick. Here’s hoping that road is
more of a fun-filled Smokey and the
Bandit-esque pathway to the sunset and less of
a Mad Max-style goat track into the unknown.
It’s been a massive year for us. We’ve
filmed two project cars for our Carnage
web series and followed the build of the
ALLSHOW VK from start to finish, which
we’re pretty stoked with. If you haven’t seen
them, check them out under the ‘Video’ tab on
streetmachine.com.au.
Other innovations this year included Luke
Nieuwhof’s day-by-day video coverage of
Mark Arblaster’s cross-America road trip in his
POR440 VG hardtop, followed immediately
by his epic daily coverage of the Aussies
taking on Hot Rod Drag Week. Luke edited
most of that sitting in the backseat of Arby’s

Val, behind the rollcage and in searing heat
most of the time – a huge effort.
Luke inspired us to raise the bar for our video
coverage of Street Machine Drag Challenge
and our video team met the challenge in
spades, incorporating epic drone and slo-mo
footage that really gives the viewer a sense of
what it’s like to take on Australia’s toughest
street car test.
Ah yes, Drag Challenge. As you’ll read from
page 114, Scotty plotted a course that took
our entrants on the toughest DC route yet,
with the weather compounding the difficulty

and really testing out all the racers.
It’s a blowout to be part of such a great event
that brings together people from all over the
country, from very different backgrounds
and in very different cars. What they have
in common is the love of a challenge, and
it is so inspiring watching how the teams
work to overcome whatever the event throws
at them.
The reaction from the racers to Drag
Challenge continues to astound us, so we’re
working on adding an extra, three-day ‘Drag
Challenge Weekend’ to our calendar of
events. It’s still in the planning stages, but it
will happen in Queensland, and, while it won’t
be as hardcore as Drag Challenge proper, it
will be a heap of fun and a great way to refine
our processes, and – hopefully – tell us if we
can one day run the full Drag Challenge five-
day torture test in the Sunshine State.
If you are interested in entering, just email us

with a photo of your car/project/empty space
in the shed, a few lines about what it is and
how quick it might be, plus all your contact
details. Then we’ll stick you on a mailing list
and as info comes to hand, you’ll be the first
to get it.
Of course, we know Drag Challenge isn’t for
everyone – Street Machine is a broach church
to reflect an incredibly varied scene. If there is
anything you’d like to see in the mag or online,
don’t bottle it up! Send us an email, give us a
buzz, or say “G’day” at a show and let us know
what’s on your mind. s
