and spent many volunteer
hours in the classroom and
with the Odyssey of the
Mind educational program.
Fitzgerald also provided
community service on behalf
of the TK Athletic Boosters,
was a member of the
Thornapple Area Enrichment
Foundation board, and was

named Hometown Hero by
the Thornapple Area
Enrichment Foundation in
2015.
Page Elementary students
and staff raised most of the
funds for the sculpture project.
The memorial committee
envisions several more art
works possibly being

installed along the
Thornapple Trail in the
future.
“We’ve become such a
busy walking and biking
community along the trail
that I think adding pieces of
art along the way is going to
be a great enhancement to
what we’ve already built

here,” Walters told the vil-
lage council. “And then, on
the flip side (the sculpture) is
being dedicated in memory
of a wonderful member of
the Middleville community
who left a huge mark on a lot
of hearts.”
“(Fitzgerald) raised her
two twins here, she loved the
(DDA) amphitheater, she
loved any music,” Jachim
said.
The amphitheater is locat-
ed by the Community
Pavilion in the park. It is the

location of the DDA’s annu-
al Riverbank Music Series.
This year’s summer concert
series kicked off June 3. It
will run every Friday through
Aug. 19, from 6:30 p.m. to
8:30 p.m.
The sculpture may be
placed along the trail, north
of the bathrooms.
“Tentatively, there’s been
a selection over by the bath-
house and in between the
parking lot,” Jachim said,
adding that Assistant Village
Manager/Planning & Zoning

director Brian Urquhart and
Departments of Public
Works director Alec Belson
have given that location their
blessing.
Urquhart recently
announced his resignation,
effective June 7; he was
hired to become the Grand
Haven city planner, effective
June 9. Belson and former
village manager Duane
Weeks took over as co-vil-
lage managers May 25 while
the search for a permanent
manager is being conducted.

TK Odyssey of the Mind teams place at World Finals

After having a year off due
to COVID, Thornapple
Kellogg Schools’ Odyssey of
the Mind program came back
in a big way this year. They
had 10 teams participate with
seven teams advancing to the
state tournament.

Two teams advanced on to
compete in the World OM
Finals which was held at Iowa
State University in Ames last
week. The Middle School
team coached by Melinda
Robinett and Kaylee
Chambers placed 10th in their

division. The High School
team coached by Melinda
Robinett and Reagan Gielincki
placed 12th in their division.
They completed with teams
from all across the U.S., from
Poland, Switzerland and Korea.
The middle school team had a
“buddy” team from Switzerland
and the HS team paired with a
team from Poland. The teams
spent time learning each oth-
er’s cultures, exchanged gifts,
and formed memories. Many
of the international teams com-
peted on a virtual platform this
year, but it was good to have
some countries join for the
in-person competition again.
Odyssey of the Mind teach-
es students how to develop
and use their natural creativity
to become problem-solvers.
They learn team work. They
learn perseverance. They
develop thinking skills that
continue to benefit them
through life. Teams of up to
seven students work together
to solve a “problem” follow-
ing the same parameters as
teams all over the globe. It is
always amazing to see the
different solutions. Teams will
begin forming again late
August for the next season.
