Darwin had no wish to be on a collision course with the Church and its belief in a
creating God. The Church of England was no longer based on an infallible church, nor
an infallible bible, but upon proper reasoning and conscience. For centuries it was the
handiwork of God in nature that was the reference for the Church of England and this
explains why his big ideas would cause such a shock.
