On the shoot

one springer. It turned out that
Martin picks-up 75 days in the
season, mainly at Worlaby but other
farms shoots locally as well. It’s
always a delight to see a picker-up
working a large team of dogs so
well; I am always slightly in awe of
someone with this skill.
After the fifth drive, Goss
Deepdale, where Guns can see
the sea when looking east towards
Skegness, the Guns headed back to
the chapel to enjoy a three-course
meal and a debrief of the day.

The Lincolnshire Wolds and
Worlaby itself are a revelation
when it comes to shooting. Pretty
landscapes, the small glacial valleys
and rolling hills make for some
exceptional, exciting and demanding
shooting. The topography of the
land meant that you felt you could
be in Wiltshire, parts of Yorkshire
or Devon. The blue skies, the sun
on your back, fast flying, high
partridges tearing over the hill
tops also reminded me at times of
shooting partridge in Spain.

For some of the Guns it was their
first visit to the shoot and they were
impressed by it. New headkeeper
Neil Swinn has quickly got to grips
with his new team and the ground
and the day ran seamlessly. They all
made it look easy, which I am quite
sure it is not.
