Y
our roving syndicate,
eight of you, have
booked a couple of days
back-to-back shooting in
Scotland, possibly on the islands,
or are heading farther afi eld to
shoot partridge in Spain. How do
you all get there?
One option would be to
get the sleeper train, which still
runs to Edinburgh, Glasgow,
Inverness, Aberdeen and Fort
William, and you can take your
guns. However, it’s a slow
journey and it certainly isn't
cheap. You’ve also got to get
from one of those destinations to
your shoot, and ScotRail banned
the carrying of fi rearms in 2017.
Flying is a more practical
option, but today you will
struggle to get a budget airline
to accept your gun, and taking
cartridges is usually out of the
question. If you want to take your
dog, too, forget it.
Extra day
So that means you all have to
pile in to separate vehicles and
start the long journey north,
possibly staying overnight. This
adds another day to your journey,
meaning more precious time out
of the offi ce, and possibly more
holiday quota being eaten into.
The cost of fuel for such a
long journey can be prohibitive
Travelling Guns
in a heavy 4x4, and the fatigue
of such a long drive can make
the next few days’ shooting
less enjoyable, along with the
foreboding thought of the return
journey doing battle on the M6
or A1, often in poor weather.
But that doesn’t need to be
the case. Have you thought
about hiring a private plane? It
isn’t as ridiculous as it sounds.
In fact, it really is a very cost-
effective and convenient way
to travel and can cost just over
£600 per person depending on
your journey distance.
