Empire Australia - 08.2019

ON THE QT, WHERE’S QT?
I have been to four different newsagents to
find Empire July. When I finally got to one
newsagent and grabbed the last copy, the
girl told me she sold almost all of them the
first day she put it out. Of course it is
thanks to the amazing Brad / Leo / Margot
trio on the front... or is it? Maybe ‘normal
movie’-related covers would attract more
attention than the usual superhero covers?
You alone will have the answers when you
find out if July sold more copies then June.
However, this is absolutely NOT a
criticism! I love every single Empire copy,
I buy them all, I collect them all, I read
them all. I love superhero movies and as
I have already told you a million times
before, I LOVE EMPIRE! Thank you
for another amazing month with my
favourite Quentin!

Glad you found (and liked) the issue!
Traditionally superhero covers sell a lot
better than ‘normal movie’ covers, but we’ll
see how things pan out for the July issue.
As you know though, despite what’s on the
cover, you’re still going to find the same
varied goodness inside each month, so
everybody still wins! Right? RIGHT?!

DAY DOES MAKE DAY!
Loved your feature on the wonderful,
forever young Doris Day (Empire, July
issue). There’s no doubt that she was a true
movie star and truly lovely person. Stars
of the past certainly carried a sense of
mystique. Ms Day had an aura about her.
It’s the passing of an era We don’t make
Doris Day-like movies anymore. Thank
you Empire for recognising this star.
Whenever I feel a bit sad and down,
a Doris film turns my Day around.
LINDA NATHANIEL, LANE COVE, NSW
“Whenever I feel a bit sad and down,
a Doris film turns my Day around” –
there’s a rhyme we can get behind!

As expected, the box office decline of 3D
movies is to blame, but if 3D is to come
back from the dead, JC is surely the man
to do it.

SUPERHERO FATI... ZZZZZ
Another day, another lazily written
online film article about ‘superhero
fatigue’. The James Bond franchise,
which has been around for close to 60
years and is set to release its 25th film
next year, proves one thing: if the fi
are good, people will show up. If t
not, people won’t. So can we ple
with the tired thinkpieces yet?
ANNA DUGGAN, VIA EMAIL
We say yes, let’s do that.

Please pass on my thanks to Empire’s Ian Freer on his touching and respectful
‘In Memoriam’ article on Peter Mayhew (Empire, July issue). Mr Mayhew
through his amazing performance as Chewbacca brought real heart to the Star
Wars franchise. Chewie, to this day, remains my favourite Star Wars character.
Ian Freer’s words were very touching. Mark Cousins ‘In Memoriam’ article
about Doris Day unfortunately left me feeling quite annoyed. It seemed to lack
respect for the legendary actress with innuendo and backhanded compliments
galore. Empire should perhaps focus on employing writers like Ian Freer at these
times instead of guest contributors who seem more interested in trying to
appear worldly rather than paying respect to the recently departed.

Both icons will be missed. Glad the Mayhew tribute gave you something to chew on
(sorry) and a shame the Doris Day one didn’t, er, make your day (sorry again).

TO 3D, OR NOT 3D? THAT IS THE QUESTION
I am gonna go on a 3D rant. Is 3D dying?
I went to see Spider-Man: Far From
Home the other day and my cinema
wasn’t even showing it in 3D (I know it
wasn’t released in 3D, BUT COME ON!)
Toy Story 1 , 2 and 3 had a 3D conversion
but not number 4. We have this great
technology and it is being utterly wasted.
Also, why can’t we download 3D movies?
Something has to be done! Can Empire
put in action its forces to turn the tide?
Or does James Cameron have to show
everybody how good it can be and save it
with the Avatar sequels? Rant over, keep
up the great mag.
