2005 FOR A LAUGH “I won an
Academy Award and five days
later was making Arrested
Development — that’s still one of my
proudest moments,” said Charlize
of her stint on the sitcom opposite
Jason Bateman. “I’m a bit of a dork.
Everybody who knows me always
says, ‘Why don’t you do [more]
comedy? You fall really well!’ ”

1999 NO RULES “It was a difficult movie,”
confessed Charlize of The Cider House Rules.
“[As an actor] every day is completely different
for a completely different reason.... You have to be able
to go to something else that’s just as powerful. Does it
make it as enjoyable? Probably not. I mean, there were
just a couple of days that Tobey [Maguire] and I had a
rough time. [But that experience] teaches you different
things. It taught me that I could fall in love with some-
body in my head while looking at someone else.”

2015 SOUND AND FURY She
chased “hard” after the part of
Imperator Furiosa in the sci-fi
film Mad Max: Fury Road partly because
“I don’t want to be put on a pedestal.
I don’t want to be anything other than
what [women] are. I don’t want to be just
a woman, but an authentic woman, in
this genre or any other genre.”

2004 MONSTER HIT “It was
life-changing — it opened a
lot of doors,” Charlize said of
winning her Oscar for Monster. “But it
made people have a lot of opinions
about what should happen next. You
realize quickly that you can never
please everybody.”

myself,” reflected
Charlize on her
youth-obsessed
queen in Snow
White and the
Huntsman. “Men
age like fine wine
and women age like
cut flowers — we
wilt after a while....
That’s what we are
led to believe.”

2017 B LON DE DATE “James Bond
doesn’t have such hot you-know-
what,” she said of her same-sex tryst
in the spy pic Atomic Blonde. “I don’t know
if it’s because of the gender, but I think with
Sofia (Boutella) it was really easy just because
we’re both dancers. With guys, they tend to
not be dancers, so it takes a bit more work.”

2018 MOTHER’S NATURE
Being single and raising two
adoptive kids (August and
Jackson) was unconventional. “[But] the
good thing about me is, I’ve never given
a s--- about what people think. That’s
the only quality I have that has probably
helped me in being a mother.”
