Proper rear protection is vital on a ute with a larger rear
overhang, like modern Tritons and Navaras in particular. Even
with the four-inch lift on his Triton, owner Brady has installed a
combination rear bar/swing-away carrier to protect the rear of
the vehicle when it’s being pushed hard in low-range.

One of the best ways to get the most out of your ute tub’s
internal storage space is to install a set of drawers just like you
would in a wagon. Rather than piling everything in one big heap,
you get secure, easily-accessible storage space across the
bottom foot or so of the tub, with plenty of room left on top for a
camping fridge, and other bulky camping gear. In this setup, the
rear of the ute becomes the kitchen with the addition of a
portable BBQ. Mounting the drawers is as simple as drilling
through the floor of the tub, and using large spreader/fish
plates and silicon to seal everything up.

Lift-up side windows offer an excellent way of accessing what’s
in the rear of the ute tub up against the headboard. In this
setup, a 12v system and battery have been installed up against
the headboard, to run the fridge and camping lights. Mounting
a battery in the rear of a ute tub has numerous benefits,
including keeping the battery away from the hot, dirty engine
bay, and mounting it near the fridge to minimize voltage drop.

If you have a large camping fridge, mounting it to the floor of
the ute on a fridge slide keeps it nice and low, and makes
accessing what’s inside easy. Mount a pair of drawers one on
top of the other on the opposite side of the tub and you’ve got a
clever, modular storage system.
