our 4WDs
differentials have an
extremely hard life.
Not only do they miss
out on the luxury of
warming up before you start
driving like your engine does,
but they also cop every boghole
and water crossing you point
your vehicle at. Not to mention
servicing of them is sometimes
overlooked, and when you
combine that with fitting larger
tyres, its no wonder some diffs
just don’t last!
Fitting bigger rubber is one
of the first mods most of us do
to our 4WDs. Larger off-road

tyres give you greater traction,
ground clearance and puncture
resistance in the bush. But
have you ever noticed that
fitting larger tyres makes your
engine work way harder when
you’re punching up the highway
to your favourite track? That is
caused by your diff ratios not
being suited to your new tyres.
This issue, we’re going to
take a closer look at the inner
workings on your diffs, how they
affect vehicle operation and
performance, the importance of
running the right gear ratios
and how to bush-proof your
diffs once and for all.
